Pickleball at the Piedmont Athletic Club!

Pickleball, a sport based on a combination of tennis, badminton and ping pong, was invented in Washington State in 1965.  Over the past 52 years, Pickleball has spread internationally from the US to Europe and Asia.  Called the fastest growing sport in America, the US Pickleball Association (USAPA.org) calls the game a “highly contagious, progressive and incurable disease” and estimates that between 40-50,000 people worldwide are currently infected. And now the Piedmont Athletic Club, managed by Corporate Fitness Works, is experiencing that Pickleball excitement!  Sunday, March 26 was our first Introduction to Pickleball class conducted by Bonnie Ballentine, a Pickleball player and instructor from Manassas, Virginia.  From classroom to court, Bonnie instructed six participants on the basics of Pickleball including stance, paddle use, and general rules for beginners.

Within minutes of getting on the court to practice returning serves, these new Pickleball players were heard to say, “This is so much fun!” and “I didn’t think I’d be able to do this and I can!”.  All players vowed to continue playing and requested more information about local training and other facilities where they can play others.
Since a Pickleball court is smaller than a tennis court, and the Club has recently only lined one of the tennis courts to include Pickleball lines, Ms. Ballentine “warned” that we will probably need to purchase a chalker so that we can use the unlined tennis court.  She’s confident Pickleball will be a real hit at Piedmont!
